Government close to decision on Christchurch

Gerry Brownlee has been reported as saying the Government is close to making an announcement about Christchurch, regarding where will be rebuilt, but more importantly, where won’t be. But the main question that has to be asked is why hasn’t there been any sort of announcement yet?

I would be quite interested to have a chat with Gerry Brownlee some time and ask him why exactly they couldn’t announce anything before this point. Even without any expert opinion, there are parts of Christchurch that you can see now cannot be rebuilt. Is this really something that needs to be announced all at once. There are people in the worst affected suburbs of Christchurch who know in the back of their minds that their area won’t be rebuilt, but they need confirmation. They need closure. Close to a decision is not good enough any more. On Wednesday, it’s four months since the February earthquake. That’s more than enough time to come to a decision.
